Physical activity and sedentary behaviour in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome: An Australian population‐based cross‐sectional study

Clinical Endocrinology — Tay CT, Moran LJ, Harrison CL, et al. | April 27, 2020

Among women (aged 22‐27 years) participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, researchers performed this cross‐sectional analysis to assess physical activity (PA) levels as well as sedentary behaviours of those with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and to evaluate their alignment with the PCOS PA guideline. They analyzed self‐reported PA levels as well as total daily sitting time among participants with (n = 7,051) and without (n = 796) self‐reported PCOS, stratified by body mass index and a combined overweight/obese group. They found an extreme prevalence of high sedentary behaviour. They noted that PA recommendations for weight maintenance were met by the majority of women, whereas PA recommendation for weight loss was met only by one in two overweight/obese women. According to the findings, there was a greater chance of overweight/obese women with PCOS engaging in insufficient PA and needing increased support to attain sustainable healthy lifestyle.
